These are our initial ideas for our trailer. Here we started
off with an idea from a real-life story where a strange woman with mental
problems had escaped from her hospital and ended up walking into one of our
group’s houses. Although the real situation was harmless, we thought we could
use this real element and develop our ideas from there because we pictured the
massive potential that comes alongside this simple idea, and the effect that having
‘based on a true story’ actually has on films.
We came up with different ideas we could use with having
this as the basis of the story. From here we developed further and eventually formed
a story-line. Once we had a brief story line for our film, we then thought the
next best step was to develop the characters.
There were two main characters that we focused on, the protagonist
and the antagonist – we used these as binary oppositions, just like Levi
Strauss’ theory suggests. From here we had arrows leaving the characters and
came up with ideas, for example what clothes they would wear, what their
potential name could be and little idiosyncrasies the character could possess.
We got this idea of using the flip-chart paper from Simon
Pegg and Edgar Wrights planning for the film ‘Hot Fuzz’. They attached a video of their flip chart to the 'extras' on the DVD to allow people to see their planning. They came up with even
the tiniest bit of detail for each character, this helped more of a background
to be set to allow the actors to understand and play their characters well,
even though the audience wasn't aware of the small details.
