Research

Another aspect of research that we decided to investigate before deciding definitely on our genre was the profit and the success of other horror films.

To investigate this, we looked at horror films that had a slightly similar story line to ours on IMDB and saw their profits and different statistics from their release.

Sinister

Date of release: 12/10/2012
Production Company: Looking Glass Studios
Lifetime Gross: $48,086,903
Theaters: 2,542
Opening: $18,007,634

Dead Silence

Date of release: 16/3/2007
Production Company: Universal Studios
Lifetime Gross: $16,809,076
Theaters: 1,806
Opening: $7,842,725

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Date of release: 9/11/1984
Production Company: New Line Cinema
Lifetime Gross: $25,504,513
Theaters: 380
Opening: $1,271,000

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

Date of release: 4/30/2010
Production Company: Warner Bro's
Lifetime Gross: $63,075,011
Theaters: 3,332
Opening: $32,902,299

These statistics show that in the past, in the Nightmare on Elm Street film, it was released in less than 400 theaters, but it gained a larger lifetime gross the Dead Silence did, even though that was shown in nearly 5 times as more theaters. This could show that its not about the release, but about how good the film actually is.
This data also shows that even less-known production companies can produce a large profit. This helps us because obviously we've had to create a company, but if we were to release it there wouldn't be loads of factors that would go against our film for it being individual.
